Where it all began…

“Red-Eye” Hughes

When Phil’s father, “Red-Eye” Hughes, got a job with “old man Traxler,” he started his own company before graduating from Furman University and went on to create Greenville’s first industrial park: North Hills Industrial Park.  He also developed apartments and small commercial buildings.  Red Hughes became a member of the Urban Land Institute (“ULI”) when it had fewer than 100 fellow developers. Membership in ULI now exceeds 40,000.  Through his connections, Red developed the first Kmart shopping center outside of their headquarters location in Detroit, Michigan, and continued to build centers across the Southeast, always with an eye for serving others with great value.  His common-sense approach and tireless hard work led to a handsome accumulation of a variety of product with valuable experience in every aspect of real estate development.

Red’s son, Phil Hughes, began full-time work with his father in 1979 after Phil completed graduate school.  Working closely with his father and brother, Bob Hughes, for 12 years provided valuable exposure and experience - handling every aspect of development from site selection to tenant relations, to design and construction, to maintenance and re-purposing for most every building type.

In 1991, Phil created Hughes Investments, Inc. He created a diversified portfolio of retail, industrial, office, mixed-use residential, land accumulation, and property management concentrated in the Carolinas.  The experience Phil gained while working at his family company was a natural segue into creating his own company that continues to uphold the values, determination, and quality founded by his father.  These values have been an integral part of Phil’s entire life.
